Korea's First CATENA-X Sandbox Verification Completed
With the EU Digital Battery Passport (DBP) set to become mandatory in 2027 and demands for transparency in supply chain carbon and quality data rising, L&F, a secondary battery materials company, has established a smart factory at its Daegu Guji Plant 1 that links a Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) system with a blockchain-based data space.

L&F announced on the 7th that it has been pursuing a project to build an 'ABB Smart Factory' that combines AI, big data, and blockchain.

This project, which has been carried out over two years starting in 2024, designed the infrastructure for collecting data across all processes and the operational structure in the first year, and completed the construction of the LCA and blockchain systems and the introduction of AI-based quality and equipment prediction models in the second year.

We are currently aiming to complete full operation after undergoing line-by-line expansion and stabilization work.

L&F is equipped with an LCA system that automatically calculates carbon emissions from raw material input to finished product shipment.

The generated data is shared externally through a 'data space' utilizing blockchain-based decentralized identity (DID) technology.

In addition, the CATENA-X sandbox inspection, a European automotive industry standard data sharing platform, last DecemberThe company stated that it has completed the certification for the first time in the country, laying the foundation to exchange carbon and quality data with global automakers in a standardized manner.

In terms of quality, the Asset Management Shell (AAS) standard framework is applied to manage equipment, process, and quality data in a consistent format, and an expandable structure is designed to accommodate future integration with Digital Twin and AI analysis.

It was announced that it has also introduced global automotive industry standard quality management models such as FMEA, APQP, and PPAP to systematically manage inspection, non-conformity, and change history.

The Head of L&F’s IT Operations Team stated, “The core of this smart factory implementation is the realization of a system where ‘data equals trust.’ We expect that providing data based on the LCA system will strengthen our capabilities to respond to ESG evaluations and enhance client trust.”

He added, “Starting with the Guji Plant 1, we plan to establish a standard smart factory model and gradually advance it to an AI-based autonomous manufacturing system.”
