VESA Shares Latest Display Standards and Conformance Program Developments
Enhanced USB4 and Thunderbolt compatibility expands applications to mobile, automotive, and gaming.

The Video Electronics Standards Association (VESA), which leads the international standards for display technology, held a press conference at the Marriott Hotel in Seoul on the 30th and shared the latest developments in the DisplayPort standard and compliance program.
At the meeting, VESA's Jim Choate, VESA Compliance Program Manager, presented key technology updates and future plans.
“VESA is an international trade association with 366 member companies worldwide, and it leads the development of standards and certification programs for display technology,” said Jim Choate, manager. “It accelerates technological advancements through an open structure that allows member companies to directly participate in standard development.”
Especially in the Asian region Emphasizing that the proportion of member companies has rapidly increased to 68%, he analyzed that this is “a result of the shift of display manufacturing and design centers to Asia.”
Accordingly, VESA is strengthening local support for the Asian region, including Korea, and providing direct technical support through Kellen.
The evolution of DisplayPort technology was a major topic of discussion at this meeting.
“The DP 2.1 standard provides up to three times the bandwidth compared to existing standards and supports resolutions up to 8K, 10K, and 16K,” said Jim Choate, manager. “In particular, it has strengthened compatibility with USB4 and Thunderbolt, and expanded its applicability to various fields such as mobile, automotive, and gaming by including advanced features such as panel self-refresh and DSC (Display Stream Compression).”
Additionally, he said, “The suitability test for the MST (Multi-Stream Transport) function has been significantly strengthened,” and “Previously, only interoperability-focused tests were possible, but recently, more than 30 new test items have been introduced, making it possible to verify stable performance even in a multi-display environment.”
“Last week’s plug test in Taipei focused on MST link layer testing using state-of-the-art equipment,” said Jim Choate, manager.
Also noteworthy are updates to cable specifications.
Various cables, including DP54, DP80, and DP80 LL (low-loss active cable), have been certified, and the 3-meter long DP80 cable in particular provides sufficient length even in a multi-display environment.
Manager Jim Choate said,“We are attaching certification logos to help consumers easily choose the right cable for their equipment,” he added.
In addition, VESA is developing 'DisplayPort Automotive Extension' for vehicle displays.
This standard is designed to ensure functional safety and security in multi-display environments within vehicles, and its level of perfection is being enhanced through linkage with MIPI and international safety standards.
“VESA’s compliance program goes beyond simple certification; it’s a forum for technology exchange and problem-solving among member companies,” said Jim Choate, manager. “We will continue to work to develop standards and improve the testing environment to lead the future of display technology.”

Kim Do-gyun, a senior researcher, emphasized, “We are focusing on three core certification items, including HDR, adaptive sync, and clear MR, through the Display Performance Metrics (DPM) working group,” and “In particular, LG has a history of being the first in the world to obtain multiple certifications.”

LG is releasing products that satisfy various tiers, from HDR 400 to 1400, and has also secured True Black certification for OLED. HDR certification is an IT-centric architecture that performs tone mapping on the GPU, which is implemented differently from TVs.
Adaptive Sync is a technology that minimizes screen flicker and frame drops caused by frequency changes in gaming environments. LG achieved this certification with a high-refresh rate monitor supporting up to 480Hz. Compared to NVIDIA's G-Sync and AMD's FreeSync, VESA certification requires higher flicker performance.
Clear MR is a metric that quantifies the response speed of a video. It measures the ratio of blurred areas to sharp pixel areas using a high-speed camera. LG has demonstrated its highest level of performance by releasing a product that has received 21,000 tiers of Clear MR certification.
Kim Do-gyun, a senior researcher, said, “LG Electronics has obtained self-testing authority from VESA based on its own testing equipment and know-how, and is conducting some certifications directly without external testing centers,” adding, “This allows us to reduce certification costs and time, and quickly bring products to the market.”
