STMicroelectronics (ST) has unveiled its first microcontroller designed in next-generation 18nm FD-SOI technology and featuring advanced embedded PCM, heralding innovation in demanding industrial applications such as factory automation, motor control, robotics, and space satellites.

ST held a press conference at Novotel Ambassador Seoul Gangnam on the 4th and announced the ‘STM32V8, the world’s first 18nm-based next-generation high-performance microcontroller.’

Ahead of the STM32V8 announcement, Dong-gu Lee, Marketing Director of ST Korea's GPM Division, introduced the 'STM32 Microcontroller Product Portfolio.'

Managing Director Dong-gu Lee said, “ST is a global company with 50,000 employees and 9,000 researchers worldwide, operating 14 production plants and over 80 sales and marketing offices. “Our Seoul branch is also part of this global network, strengthening our position in the domestic market,” he said.

Since launching the world's first ARM Cortex-M3 core-based MCU in 2007, ST has maintained the No. 1 global market share by introducing over 30 product series and high-performance models (such as the H7).

According to a recent report from market research firm Omdia, ST has held a dominant position in the MCU market since 2022, and similar results are expected this year.

Additionally, ST is securing the diversity of its MCUs by strengthening various functions such as low-power design, graphics and AI acceleration, and Wi-Fi.

We support our clients' technological innovation by developing products that align with the latest trends, including wearable devices, touch screens, and industrial subsystems.

In terms of development environment, ST also provides an inexpensive and efficient hardware platform called 'Nucleo', which helps customers quickly develop prototypes and verify them in real time.

“ST has shipped approximately 15 billion MCUs worldwide since 2007, driving growth and innovation in the semiconductor industry,” said Managing Director Dong-gu Lee. “With the launch of ‘STM32V8,’ we are presenting a new vision of not only expanding the MCU market but also expanding the scope of actual application.”

Next, ST Korea GPM Division Marketing Manager Hyun-Sung Sung presented on 'STM32V8, the next-generation high-performance flagship microcontroller.'

This product combines the 18nm FD-SOI process and phase change memory (PCM) technology to provide superior density, energy efficiency, and durability compared to existing products.Show off your surname.

“The STM32V8 is the industry’s first general-purpose microcontroller to use the 18nm process and PCM, and is a product that combines high-density design, outstanding performance, and reliability in various industrial environments,” said Hyundai Vice President.

The biggest feature of STM32V8 is the combination of 18nm FD-SOI process and PCM.

This has enabled a high density that is 2.5 times higher than conventional flash memory, and has enabled integration of various digital and analog IPs into a smaller chip area.

PCM boasts the smallest size of existing memory cells, enabling larger memory capacities to be mounted on smaller chips.

Additionally, due to the characteristics of the FD-SOI process, it has high energy efficiency and the ability to operate stably even in extreme environments.

STM32V8 adopts ARM's flagship core, Cortex-M85.

This core boasts significantly higher scalar and vector computation performance than its predecessors, and features enhanced helium architecture and various memory and security features.

Performance is improved by up to six times over existing products in machine learning and digital signal processing (DSP) applications.

In fact, it recorded AI computational performance that was 3.5 times higher than the existing H7 series at the same frequency, and 6 times higher at the maximum frequency (800 MHz).

STM32 V8 can be applied in a wide range of fields including factory automation, robotics, energy management, smart cities, healthcare, bio-sensing, audio, transportation, and aerospace.

In particular, it has been applied to SpaceX's mini laser satellite communication equipment, proving its durability and performance even in space environments, such as realizing long-distance communication of 4,000 km at a speed of 25 Gbps.

PCM and FD-SOI technology has already been proven in the automotive industry and operates reliably even in extreme environments, including radiation resistance.

The STM32V8 meets IoT standard security certification level 3, including PSA certification and SE-SM, and integrates all the features required for industrial and embedded systems, including various connectivity (Ethernet, USB, CAN, UART, etc.), high-performance timers, graphics accelerators, and audio/camera interfaces.

Other strengths include internal 4MB non-volatile memory, 1.5MB SRAM, external memory expandability, and support for operating temperatures up to 140 degrees.

The STM32 V8 began development in 2014 through a partnership with Samsung Foundry and is now in mass production.

Hyundai Motor Company Vice President emphasized, “This product goes beyond simple technological advancement and will contribute to innovation across the industry and strengthening global competitiveness.”
