Woori Group affiliate Woori E&L Harutin is mass-producing and supplying ultra-thin MiniLED backlights for next-generation AI laptops of major North American IT companies.
Mass production began in the first half of this year, and deliveries are currently being made at a scale of 15,000 units per month.

Woori E&L Harutin announced on the 22nd that the product is a mini LED backlight set for laptop displays.

It is a method that arranges thousands of ultra-small LED chips at high density and drives them independently using local dimming technology.

They explained that by split-driving more than 1,000 LED chips in a laptop-sized form factor, they achieved both deep contrast and high brightness compared to conventional LCDs.

According to market research firm TrendForce, the share of AI laptops in the global laptop market is expected to rise from 37.5% this year to 50% next year and 84.9% in 2029.

With the successive emergence of AI-dedicated platforms such as NVIDIA RTX Spark and Qualcomm Snapdragon X2 Elite, high-performance CPUs, GPUs, and NPUs are being integrated together in a single device.

The explanation is that as internal space utilization and heat management become important, the demand for display components that enable thin yet high-quality screens is also increasing.

Woori E&L Harutin announced that it has applied a thin module design compared to competing solutions through its proprietary film-encapsulant technique and optical structure optimization.

This technology completed patent registration in Korea and Japan this year.

It was reported that the product ensures visibility even outdoors with a maximum brightness of 2,000 nits, and features OLED-level color reproduction, power consumption, and brightness uniformity, making it suitable for AI-based video generation, creative work, and high-end gaming.

An official from Woori E&L Harutin stated, “As the proportion of high-quality visual tasks, such as image generation and video editing utilizing on-device AI, increases, the importance of display technology capable of accurately representing them is also growing,” adding, “Our ultra-thin MiniLED technology is a next-generation solution that achieves image quality comparable to OLED while maintaining the durability and price competitiveness of LCD.”

Woori E&L Harutin has been expanding its MiniLED business based on LED technology accumulated from TVs, monitors, and laptops.
