ST Launches 'ST54M' Security Mobile Chip Equipped with PQC

A secure mobile chip has emerged that integrates a Post-Quantum Cryptography (PQC) hardware accelerator into a single IC to prepare for quantum computing threats.
This product integrates NFC, security elements, and eSIM functions into a single chip to support smartphone and personal electronic device manufacturers in meeting next-generation security requirements.

STMicroelectronics (hereinafter ST) announced on the 29th that it has launched the secure mobile chip 'ST54M'.

ST explained that the ST54M integrates a PQC hardware accelerator, NFC controller, security element (SE), and eSIM function into a single IC, supporting various use cases such as contactless payment, public transportation tickets, access control, digital identity verification, and digital car keys.

ST54M is equipped with a hardware accelerator dedicated to PQC algorithms, including ML-KEM and ML-DSA.

This engine supports a phased transition from hybrid encryption to full PQC implementation and is equipped with defense capabilities against side-channel attacks and error injection attacks. The company stated.

It is explained that it was designed to proactively meet market requirements related to PQC, which are expected to become mandatory around 2030.

CC (Common Criteria) 2022 EUCC and EMVCo certification tests have been completed, and production certification is targeted for July of this year.

In addition to security features, the ST54M is equipped with an enhanced RF front-end that supports stable read and write operations even with small antennas and single-ended configurations, the company stated.

With large-capacity memory, multiple applications can be run simultaneously, and use cases such as mPOS (mobile Point-of-Sale) and wireless charging can also be implemented.

It was designed for the entire personal electronics ecosystem, including mobile operators, banks, government agencies, public transportation operators, vehicle manufacturers, and digital wallet service providers.

David Richetto, Vice President and Business Unit Manager of ST Connected Security Group, said, “By combining the PQC hardware accelerator with NFC, embedded security devices, and eSIM capabilities, the ST54M provides a security foundation that enables device manufacturers to prepare for next-generation mobile experiences.”
