NIMS and Korea-Japan Joint Materials Science Research Center Open

The Korea Institute of Materials Science (KIMS, President Choi Cheol-jin) is spurring global cooperation in materials science by opening a Korea-Japan Joint Materials Science Research Center.

The Korea Institute of Materials Science (KIMS) has opened an international joint research center with the National Institute for Materials Science (NIMS, President Kazuhiro Hono).

The opening of this center is based on the Strategic Memorandum of Understanding (MOC) signed between the two institutions last June, and is significant in that it establishes a sustainable cooperative system between the two countries' leading materials science research institutions.

The KIMS-NIMS International Joint Research Center aims to build a long-term partnership by combining the research capabilities and technological strengths of both institutions and to conduct world-class joint research projects.

Currently, KIMS is actively pursuing collaborative projects in the fields of magnetic and ceramic materials, investing approximately 1 billion won in research funds.

In particular, the two organizations are developing the core technology for new transparent ceramic materials by utilizing the manufacturing of ceramic nanopowders with complex multi-component compositions and current-applied ultra-fast sintering technology.

To this end, principal researchers visit each other and conduct joint experiments. We are currently conducting data analysis, and various achievements are expected in the future, such as patent applications and joint publications in international academic journals.

The two organizations plan to continuously explore joint research opportunities and strengthen the foundation for stable cooperation through regular technical workshops and symposiums, as well as research personnel exchanges. This is expected to go beyond a simple one-time exchange and become a model for substantive, long-term international cooperation.

Choi Cheol-jin, President of the Korea Institute of Materials Science, said, “The opening of the international joint research center with NIMS is the starting point for in-depth technological cooperation between our two institutions,” and added, “We hope that by combining our excellent research capabilities, we will enhance our global technological competitiveness and further expand exchanges between Korea and Japan in the field of materials science.”
