Contributing to worker safety at large-scale production sites such as steel mills
POSCO DX will be allocated 5G and introduce it to large-scale production sites.
The Ministry of Science and ICT announced on the 11th that it has completed the procedures for 5G frequency allocation and period telecommunications business registration for POSCO DX. The application frequency is 4.7GHz 100MHz wide, and the period of use is 2 years.
The Ministry of Science and ICT said, “It is noteworthy that the steel industry, which plays a pivotal role in exports, employment, and added value creation in our country, is promoting the introduction of 5G for the first time in Korea to ensure automation and worker safety.”
With this frequency allocation, the number of corporations that have been allocated 5G frequencies for Ieum has increased to 14, and Ieum 5G service is currently being provided to 40 locations across 24 organizations.
The main allocations are to 14 companies: Naver Cloud (December 2021), LG CNS (March, June, December 2022), SK Networks Service (May, November 2022), Naver Communications (August 2022, April 2023), CJ Olive Networks (August 2022, April 2023), KTMOS Northern (October 2022, February, August 2023), Sejong Telecom (October 2022), Wizcore (October 2022, February (April) 2023), Newgens (November 2022), Hyundai Autoever (April 2023), LS ELECTRIC (April 2023). △MegaZone Cloud (July 2023) △LG Electronics (July 2023) △POSCO DX (September 2023), etc.
The major designated organizations are: Korea Electric Power Corporation (October 2022, February 2023), Joint Chiefs of Staff (October 2022, June 2023), KT (October 2022), Korea Water Resources Corporation (October 2022), UN Angel (November 2022), Korea Hydro & Nuclear Power (November 2022, February 2023), Korea Aerospace Industries (December 2022), Government Complex Management Headquarters (December 2022), and CAMTIK (February 2023).Kuntec (June 23), etc.
POSCO DX improves the existing work of transporting molten iron (molten iron) from the blast furnace to the steel mill by operating a locomotive based on the 5G communication network.
The plan is to integrate autonomous locomotives with railway control systems to automate operations and improve worker safety. To achieve this, the locomotives will be equipped with lidar and multiple cameras to eliminate blind spots and incorporate features like emergency remote control to prevent worker accidents.
POSCO DX plans to build a system at its Gwangyang Steelworks that acquires and controls high-definition video in real time based on 5G, and to provide services such as remote crane operation, robot patrols for disaster and safety management, and operation optimization and training through a digital twin of the steelworks, thereby improving efficiency and safety.
Choi Woo-hyuk, director of the Ministry of Science and ICT's Radio Policy Bureau, said, "This supply of E-eum 5G frequencies is significant in that E-eum 5G is being introduced for the first time in the steel industry, which plays a pivotal role in the domestic industry, for automation and safety management." He added, "We will actively support the expansion of E-eum 5G throughout the domestic steel industry in the future so that it can promote exports and employment and create more added value."
