Corporate Executives Need to Prepare for Social, Behavioral, and Technological Disruptions
Emphasize the use of ‘what if’ scenarios

Gartner has announced seven major trends in technology disruption that should be watched over the next five years, suggesting technologies that will drive digital business and innovation in 2022.

On the 21st, Gartner announced the major trends in technology disruption that should be noted over the next five years. Gartner emphasized that chief information officers (CIOs) should take the time to consider “what if” scenarios to avoid surprise attacks by social, behavioral, and technological disruptions.

At the Gartner IT Symposium/Xpo in Australia, David Yockelson, Gartner analyst and vice president, said many seemingly futuristic technology disruptions could come sooner than we think.

“Disruption is a fundamental shift that creates lasting change, and successful organizations will be those prepared to handle it,” said Vice President Yokelson. “We must continue to ask ‘what if?’ to seize the opportunities that disruption presents.

He then presented seven key technology outlook trends that technology executives should consider over the next five years: △Metaverse work experience △Flying cars △Digital human economy △Decentralized autonomous organizations △Wireless charging for electric vehicles (EVs) △Graphene to replace silicon △Technology becoming disposable

Gartner said 30% of the increased investment in 'metaverse' technology is in building virtual workspaces. By 2027, we will reinvent the office experience, encouraging employees to collaborate in more immersive workspaces and “intraverse” than virtual offices.

'Unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs)' are mainly used to transport passengers over short distances in urban areas, and are called drone taxis.

Gartner said CIOs should evaluate what problems they could solve by using these vehicles to transport people and cargo, even as they face potential regulatory challenges when it comes to using AI to pilot aircraft and enable air travel in congested areas.

The ‘digital human economy’ presents opportunities for new digital ecosystems, supported by technologies that bring individuals and organizations together to innovate and interact in new ways.

A 'decentralized autonomous organization (DAO)' is a new type of organizational model that is emerging in the IT service market, and is defined as a digital entity that runs on a blockchain.

This could enable business interactions with other DAOs, digital and human agents, and enterprises without traditional human oversight, he said. Although DAOs are still in their early stages, they have the potential to significantly impact many of the norms in the current tech industry.

'Wireless Electric Vehicle Charging' is expected to be most suitable for fleet vehicles such as buses and taxis, and the market size of residential charging facilities is expected to grow in particular as electric vehicle owners enjoy the convenience of wireless charging without the need for cable connection.

'Graphene Replaces Silicon' is a single-atom-thick sheet of pure carbon bonded in a hexagonal honeycomb lattice, and could replace current silicon devices, especially for wireless communications. CIOs should consider new possibilities based on graphene-based technologies and begin identifying new suppliers.

Finally, Gartner said that while business composability is already widely used, there is an opportunity for CIOs to take it a step further and prepare for the flexibility of disposable technologies.
