[Editor's Note] STMicroelectronics (hereinafter referred to as ST) is hosting the 'STM32 Quest: 2024 University Developer Contest (GFX & Wireless)' for college students. The theme for 2024 is 'Implement your own ideas using ST's GUI and Wireless'. As it is held for college students, it is also meaningful in terms of fostering future engineers from the perspective of STEM (science, technology, engineering, and mathematics) that ST emphasizes. During the period, ST marketers will provide webinar sessions on GFX & Wireless solutions, and STM32 development boards will be distributed to students to provide them with the experience of developing their own creative projects. We met with Lee Jun-ho, deputy marketing manager in charge of the STM32 Wireless product line, another main character of the STM32 Quest following TouchGFX, to hear about the STM32WB series.

■ Introduction to the STM32WB series and features of the NUCLEO-64 STM32WB55 board
Based on the Arm®Cortex®‐M4 core and the Arm®Cortex®‐M0+ core, the STM32WB wireless microcontrollers embed wireless connectivity and a general-purpose microcontroller in a single system-on-chip (SoC).
The NUCLEO-WB55RG board is a development board that includes an STM32WB product, a wireless antenna, and an ST-LINK debugger, and supports a universal Arduino connector to easily expand additional functions.
■ Has the demand for the STM32WB series increased along with the increase in applications where wireless technology is applied?
Bluetooth devices are shipped in excess of 5 billion units each year, and the market is growing at a double-digit rate each year.
In addition, the market is expanding by adding products that support various protocols such as Zigbee, Thread, and Matter.
STM32WB is a dual-core multi-protocol product that supports all of the above protocols and is therefore used in many applications worldwide.
■ Advantages of using the STM32WB series
The dual-core architecture allows for distributed execution of wireless stacks and applications, providing superior security and real-time processing performance.
It also provides 1MB of flash and 256KB of SRAM memory, allowing multi-protocol stacks to be installed internally without concerns about capacity.
■ Synergy that can be achieved when using TouchGFX and STM32WB together
The most common way is to display the alarm data on the mobile phone's screen, so that users can check the contents more conveniently.
It can also be used to wirelessly update the device's firmware or UI components via OTA.
