“In the digital twin era, 3D scanners that reflect the real world are in the spotlight”
“ Objects that are not 3D scanned can no longer reflect realistic values on digital platforms ”
3D scanning is becoming more common for all tasks, including smart factories, VR/AR, and CG.

[Editor's Note] On the 9th, Creaform held the '2023 Creaform User Meeting' event at the Yangjae El Tower Annex Spotime and talked about Creaform's new products for 2023 and application cases of 3D scanner technology in various industries. At the event, General Manager Kim Geon-ah explained why 3D scanners are welcomed in various industries, announced services that actively reflect feedback from Korean customers, and announced new HandySCAN 3D™|MAX series products. He said that 3D scanning has established itself as an essential solution in the digital twin era and is attracting attention in various fields such as smart factories and automobiles. Our magazine interviewed Kim Geon-ah, Creaform’s head of Korea, and asked her about 3D scanner trends and Creaform’s view on the Korean market.
■ Please tell us about the purpose and goals of the Creaform User Meeting event.
First of all, the Creaform User Meeting started in 2019 and is now in its fifth year.
We would like to express our deepest gratitude to our customers for their support, which made this event a success again this year.
This event is a technical forum prepared for Creaform's current and future customers.
This is a total package event that introduces Creaform's solutions, business models, and new products to customers, and also includes a technology forum hosted by experts and a demo booth where customers can experience the solutions firsthand.
■ 3D scanners are being introduced in various industries. Why are 3D scanners welcomed by these industries?
There are two reasons.
Firstly, because of the advancement of technology, objects that are not 3D scanned can no longer reflect realistic values on digital platforms.
The trend is for everyone, from engineers to general users, to use 3D scanners that realistically reflect the real world in the era of digital twins.
For example, 3D scanning is becoming the basis for all period operations, from smart factories for manufacturing quality to general use markets for VR/AR and CG processing.
Secondly, it is becoming a solution that overcomes the limitations of existing quality verification solutions.
3D scanners are a solution that can verify the external appearance of a measured product through three-dimensional data, as mass production quality solutions and ultra-precision solutions through vision are becoming established.
The application of these solutions is expanding across all sectors: automotive, aviation, military, and heavy equipment.
■ What are the features of the new products announced at this event?
The HandySCAN 3D|MAX model released this time is a device that maximizes the scanning speed, ease of use, and flexibility of scanning operations that customers need more.
>
As you can see in the demo, it has a really fast measurement speed, being able to scan a 7m van in about 30 minutes.
The MAX series delivers professional-grade results with a spatial accuracy of 0.100 mm + 0.015 mm/m, ISO 17025 certification and VDI/VDE 2634 Part 3 compliance, making it ideal for quality control, reverse engineering applications that require precision in very tight tolerances and large components.
It also features Creaform's dynamic referencing algorithm, enabling accurate 3D scanning of any object, not only in the lab and workshop, but also outdoors.
Workers can quickly prepare scan jobs through plug-and-play and integrate 3D scanning into any CAD software, accelerating reverse engineering, 3D inspection, and product development for large parts and assemblies.
Additionally, the detailed warranty options and additional accessories released together are also expected to be good lubricants that complete the user's awareness of Creaform.
■ These new products were first unveiled in Korea. Why did you choose Korea?
Recently, Korea's status has been upgraded to that of an advanced country with sufficient infrastructure and social and cultural standards to lead technology and build a stable supply chain since the COVID-19 era.
The launch of Creaform's new product in Korea is seen as a good opportunity to hear customer reactions and feedback from leading markets, reflecting this point.
The Korean market, which will be expanded by the new product, is expected to account for more than 10-20% of the existing sales market, and based on this, Creaform can expect high performance in the scanning market for large products and infrastructure that were previously limited, as well as in the fields of more diverse customer applications.
■ It was announced that they are actively accepting feedback from Korea. I'm curious about the cases applied to the product
The area that received the most feedback from Korean customers is the accident insurance option called after-sales service and support.
Koreans always worry about 'what if', 'what if', like 'what if this doesn't apply'.
In foreign countries, when portable equipment falls to the ground, it usually ends with providing a physical solution, but Koreans emphasize partnership and relationship, asking what would happen if it falls.
Accident coverage option is a type of insurance option.
This is an option that guarantees unconditional repairs once a year even if the product is damaged due to customer negligence, and this is the part that received the most feedback from Koreans.
And Koreans also make many practical requests.
For example, if the hand scanner has a small number of targets and only measures a certain area or scans a certain number of points, it can be used to work on that area without having to work on many targets.
A system that can operate the number of targets very innovatively and flexibly has been applied to the MAX series.
■ I’m curious about Creaform’s goals for 2024.
2Creaform's goal for 2024 is to become the best partner that grows together with customers by maximizing customer satisfaction based on a broad portfolio and optimal localized services and solutions.
To this end, Creaform Korea will strengthen the capabilities of its domestic partners and develop systems and solutions for customer convenience at the headquarters level to become the partner that customers absolutely need.
■ Lastly, please say a word to e4ds readers.
e4ds is the best medium and partner connecting Creaform and its readers.
At e4ds, we will strive to become a company that provides readers with the information content they need and find useful during this important time filled with various technologies and services, and to become a Creaform that grows together with them.
Thank you for your support.
