Ki-Tae Park, CEO of Iron Device, defines audio system semiconductor market as the one in which small and medium fabless companies can compete with small capital and technology rather than as digital SoC segment requiring large-scale capital. Because of steep entry barrier of the market, he thinks that the company needs to secure its own long-term strategic IPs for quick response to demand. “Our top-priority market will be a new and rapidly growing audio semiconductor market for smart devices and wireless audio devices.”
Audio system semiconductor market demands various foundation technologies such as processes, IPs, expert designers, integration knowhow, etc. and is mostly dominated by companies with more than 20 years of business history in the field. Thus, Iron Device’s competitiveness can be seen from the fact that its development team has developed power process-applied products for over 20 years now for major domestic and overseas companies and has an accumulated sales record of more than 200 million chips.
Another factor in its competitiveness is that, as a result of long-term technical cooperation, it has close relationship with global consignment companies in each step of its business. For example, to provide its products, the company needs to go through such processes as wafer, packaging, test, shipping, etc.
With the goal of achieving USD 470 million by 2019, the company is currently developing a product for volume production device while proceeding with investment promotion for its successful commercialization in time. Park emphasized that the company’s new development is “an innovative product which achieves the smallest size in the industry, breakthrough BOM cost reduction and high-performance mixed signals.”
Iron Device is currently maintaining cooperative relationship with Bang & Olufsen, the world’s leading audio company. “For the future, our eyes are on such fields as healthcare and IoT,” he added.
